The Malta Rabbit Club – Since 1963
he Malta Rabbit Club, established in 1963 by Mr Joe Debattista. This milestone of more than 60 years is a testament to the dedication and passion of the club, which has evolved, and is now promoting the care of rabbits on the island.
The club’s origins can be traced back to a small group of rabbit enthusiasts who came together to share their knowledge and love for rabbits. Over the years, the club has grown its reputation, in fact the club has also attained several achievements throughout the years where it has won the Youth Volunteer Award in 2021 and the Victor Calvagnia Children’s Award in 2024 and 2025, both organized by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector. Furthermore, over the past 5 years the NGO has achieved various awards organized by the Animal Welfare Directorate within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights: Most Popular Educator, Most Popular Adopted Pet of the Year, Smartest Pet, Best Companion, Most Popular NGO and Best Innovative Animal Welfare Project. It is a testament to the hard work and expertise of the different committee members, which throughout the years have been instrumental in raising the standards of rabbit care in Malta. Too add to all these awards, we also mention that in 2025 and 2026, two Committee Members, our very own Vice President Alice Anne Steer and President Felix Farrugia, have been respectively honoured by the Żejtun local council, the award for “Ħarsien id-drittijiet tal-annimali”. Awards and honours, as an NGO, is so proud of.
The Malta Rabbit Club has been an important part of the island’s animal-loving community for over 60 years, and it continues to play a vital role in promoting the care and showing of rabbits. We look forward to many more years of success and growth.
